R.H. Fencing The Northampton Fencing Service

Close board fence construction

1) The old fence is first removed and fence posts are concreted into the ground. These are 9' posts that are concreted to a depth of 2'6". Each post is notched in order to receive the horizontal arris rails. 2) Arris rails are fixed so that the feather edge boards can be nailed into place. Depending on the height there can be 3 or 2 arris rails.

3) Gravel boards are fixed to the lower part of the posts onto which the feather edge boards will rest. The gravel boards serve to keep the boards from getting too wet and also as the name suggests to hold back gravel or soil. 4) Eventually the fence is ready to be boarded with feather edge boards. Each board overlaps the previous and we hand nail each board.

5) Here we see the reverse of the fence. This will normally face the property when the fence fronts onto a public path/road. The reason for this is to prevent the arris rails being used to scale the fence. This does not have to be the case when using this type of fence to separate rear gardens not accessible by the public.
